FAQs
Why does a pond liner need an underlay?
Ponds, dams, and other waterways all require a strong and sturdy underlay to help prevent punctures from sharp objects into the main liner setup, which can cause water to leak into the soil, and soil sediments to contaminate the water. Once a water body is affected in this way, it can be very difficult to reverse and get your water quality back to where it was.
What does GSM refer to?
Grams per square metre is the metric used to measure a material's weight and density. In the case of a pond liner underlay, a higher GSM rating will usually mean a more durable material.
How can I attach my strips of pond underlay?
You do not need to securely attach every strip of underlay together, as it's used as a protective cushion rather than a sealed exterior. However, you do need to make sure that all areas of your eventual pond have underlay coverage in preparation for laying down and attaching the pond liner.
What are some common types of underlay?
The most common material for a reliable underlay is some form of geotextile fabric that allows for some flexibility and breathability under the liner. Old pond liners can be used if necessary to double the protection. For budget situations, you could use recycled carpet or sand. However, we would always strongly recommend to go with a material that has been ISO accredited, such as our underlay options.
