Building Your Pond or Dam Site: Best Practices
Before you have a chance to use all of the exciting products you'll find on this page, you're going to want to make sure that your pond or dam site has been sufficiently primed and prepared. There are a number of considerations and best practices that you can follow to ensure the long-term viability and safeguarding of your water system.
Site Selection
You should look to find a spot that will have a good level of access to sunlight. While it isn't essential to set up in a completely shadeless area, sunlight is vital for stimulating photosynthesis in plants that will help give your fish the oxygen they need. You should also try to avoid placing your pond directly under deciduous trees if possible; large numbers of falling leaves that will decompose in your water will lead to an excess of harmful nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.
Design & Depth
For most ponds beyond small, ornamental ones, it's best to try and arrange a variety of depths. Frogs and other insects will appreciate shallow areas, whereas fish will need deeper areas to take refuge in, particularly in the summer.
You should also avoid sheer edges for your pond. Gentle slopes make the installation process easier as it will typically remove the chances of soil collapse.
Protecting the Liner
Once you've dug out the foundations, it's time to set down your pond liners. Even though these are usually made of tough rubber material, you can still take steps to add additional protections. Start with a recognised EPDM pond underlay made from a reliable, geotextile material. And remove all visible sharp objects and roots that may grow and penetrate the liner.
Filling the Pond
Although it always isn't practical or possible, rainwater is the better option when it comes to initially filling your pond. That's because tap water will often contain substances such as chlorine which can harm fish. Make sure that you leave plenty of additional liner over the edges of your pond; the weight of the water will pull it down. Wait until the pond is full before trimming it.
FAQs
Will I need to connect and secure the underlay?
You don't need to worry about meticulously attaching the sections of underlay. It's there simply for added protection for the main liner, and it needs a bit of room and freedom to cope with the shifts in soil underneath.
How should I apply the adhesive sealant?
You can apply adhesive sealants directly onto the EPDM liners when it comes to fixing it in place. You won't need any additional tools beyond a spatula.
What are the advantages of Rollgum products?
Rollgum products are designed to work seamlessly together. Their EPDM liners will not leach nasty chemicals into your water system. There is also no micra by-product involved in the manufacturing process, meaning you won't have to spend time cleaning it off during the installation. Additionally, Rollgum primer is designed to automatically activate when it comes into contact with the liner, meaning you won't need additional tools such as a quickscrubber during the process.
