Why is algae such a problem for ponds and dams?

Algae and other aquatic weeds quickly dominate water systems if they’re allowed to grow in an uncontrolled manner. Some types of algae produce toxins that can affect fish and other plants. They also contribute to the deoxygenation of water systems, which again can quickly harm fish and other forms of aquatic life.

What causes algae to grow so quickly?

Algae feeds off excess nutrients (in particular nitrogen and phosphorus) usually caused by agricultural runoff and decomposing organic matter from leaves and animal waste. If water is allowed to stagnate, algae grows much more aggressively. Anaerobic bacteria can speed this process up further by releasing gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which will often produce bad odours around your waterways.
