Matala Air Station Diffuser—9’’ MDB12 Twin Disc With Single Base and EPDM Membrane
What is a Matala Air Station Diffuser?
The Matala MDB12 air diffuser is a twin disc aeration system capable of producing streams of air and bubbles to enter your dam, pond, or lake. Made of high-grade EPDM rubber (membrane) and heavy-duty PVC (stand and frame), Matala air station diffusers are strong and durable, guaranteeing that they will last for many years.
Why Matala 9” Air Diffusers are Important
Diffusers are vital components for all subsurface aeration systems. They are the exit points for streams of air to enter a water system and disperse columns of bubbles which rise up to the surface, taking deoxygenated water with them. Without reliable and robust diffusers, an aeration system might not be able to consistently deliver the levels of aeration needed to keep fish in good health and algal blooms under control.
Benefits of Matala 9” Air Diffusers
Even Dispersion of Fine Bubbles
With two discs instead of one, you gain a substantial increase in your bubble dispersion paving the way for outstanding aeration within your water system.
Intelligent Protection
When air is running through the diffuser disc, the membrane opens. If the air stops, the membrane immediately closes. This helps the diffuser to resist tearing.
Low Maintenance
Matala’s non-clogging design and intelligent operation means less maintenance, making them a sound long-term investment.
A Leading Brand Partner
Matala is one of the most well-respected names in the water aeration industry, guaranteeing quality no matter which of their products you go with.
What’s included
- 2 x 9″ fine bubble membrane diffuser discs
- 1 x heavy duty base
- 1 x riser
- Required fittings for assembly
- Clamp for attaching your diffuser to air hose
How To Install and Maintain Your Matala 9” Twin Disc Air Diffusers
Installation
-
Begin by filling the base with gravel (or something similar) to ensure the diffuser remains fixed at the base of your water system.
-
Push the air delivery pipe into the slot of the base, then clamp it into place. Attach the check valve to the air delivery pipe - this acts as an additional failsafe to prevent water from entering the air hose.
-
Attach the riser to the top of the base, before screwing the air station diffuser into place. If you do not require a riser, you can opt for our Matala 9” MDB11 Single Disc instead.
-
With the hose attached, you then need to simply travel out to where you are aiming to position your diffuser and drop it into the water.
Maintenance
Matala is very much a DIY pond air diffuser – you won’t require extensive maintenance to keep your aeration system ticking over. The key maintenance considerations you’ll need to make will likely include:
-
Checking the pressure gauge at your compressor - an increase in pound-force per square inch (PSI) may indicate a blockage or clog around your diffuser.
-
Using clean water and a soft-bristled brush to scrub the rubber disc (avoid using stiff wire brushes as these can tear the membrane).
-
Soaking the discs in white vinegar if there is heavy calcium buildup.
-
Removing biofilm from in and around the diffuser.
-
Checking the valve to ensure air is still only able to flow one way.

Looking for compatible hose?
We suggest you use Matala Weighted Air Hose, a high-quality, self-sinking air hose designed to sink to the bottom of your dam, lake or pond without additional weight. This prevents unsightly, spaghetti-looking strands of hose floating on the surface of your water.
Looking for a compatible aerator?
We suggest the Matala Hakko for dams smaller than ½ an acre (2,000m2) surface area and the Matala Rocking Piston for larger dams—up to 4 acres. You can purchase these as complete aeration kits through our parent company, Water Quality Solutions. Looking for a different aerator? See all of our dam aerators.
FAQs
Why should I choose a twin disc over a single disc diffuser system?
With twin discs, you’re getting a much wider column of rising bubbles. This column is responsible for dragging deoxygenated water from the base of your water body to the surface, where it can be reoxygenated. Essentially, you’re getting much higher oxygen transfer efficiency and water turnover.
Are there any drawbacks to twin disc systems?
With two disc diffusers, you will likely have to carry out more thorough or regular maintenance as the infrastructure is slightly more complex. They’ll often be a little heavier, meaning initial installation might be trickier. And they rely on more powerful air compressors which could result in higher energy costs.
What is the best aerator for the Matala 9” MDB12 diffusion discs?
The Matala Hakko is great for dams smaller than ½ an acre (2,000m2) surface area and the Matala Rocking Piston is perfect for larger dams - up to four acres. You can purchase these as complete aeration kits through our parent company, Water Quality Solutions.
Are circular diffuser discs better than tube diffusers?
Circular diffuser discs and tube diffusers both have different strengths and limitations. Disc diffusers are easier to maintain and have higher oxygen transfer efficiency but they might have higher initial costs. Tube diffusers produce larger bubbles for increased mixing capability but are harder to maintain and have shorter life spans.
