Filters
Having a high quality air pump is key to building a successful aeration system for your pond or dam. And a reliable air filter within your system is vital for guaranteeing a consistent air flow. We offer air filters for three of the leading pump manufacturers on the market, so no matter which brand you favour, you'll be able to find something that fulfils your needs. Air Filters: Why They're So Important
All subsurface aeration systems rely on a constant flow of air to encourage water circulation within a body. This circulation ensures that oxygenated water disperses to all levels of a pond, which helps to reduce water stratification and stagnation.
Air filters capture all of the impurities and small pieces of debris that are drawn in by the compressor. This helps safeguard the compressor as it sends this pressurised air along the pipes and into the water via the gas stations. It's vital to keep the compressor protected, as this is the heartbeat of the entire system.
Some setups will have an air filter in place behind the air compressor. This is because compressed air can have traces of moisture or oil, which is also captured by the filter. This dual filtration results in very clean air entering the water.
How to Install a Replacement Air Filter
Replacing your filter is usually a quick and straightforward task and should form a regular part of your wider maintenance checks. We recommend checking your air filters every three months, or if you notice a reduction in the efficiency of your aeration output.
To replace your air filter:
-
Turn off the power to ensure no part of the aeration system remains running
-
Locate your filter housing. This will usually be close to your air compressor and will normally be in a separate compartment.
-
Open the housing to gain access to the filter, and remove the old filter. Many filters can be washed and reused; however, if they've been in the system for a long time, then we would recommend a complete replacement with a brand new filter.
-
Install the new filter, ensuring that it is aligned correctly, and replace the cover to the housing. You can then restore power and check that your aeration system returns to its optimal performance.
FAQs
What is a subsurface aeration air filter?
A subsurface aeration air filter is a vital component of an aeration system that traps dust and debris from air before it can enter a compressor and cause potential damage. It also prevents moisture and oil from getting into the main body of water.
Are there multiple types of air filters?
There are multiple types of air filter formations and materials. Our Hakka air filter acts as a pad and is highly effective at capturing and absorbing moisture and oil. On the other hand, our Matala and Vertex air filters have the more common wavy pattern, making them great at capturing fine dust particles.Â
How can I tell if my air filter needs replacing?
You can usually see signs of a potential issue with your air filter. You'll be able to see if your aeration output has dropped from the level of bubbles on the water's surface. You may also hear a hissing sound in and around your compressor unit. And you'll be able to feel if your compressor is overheating.
Should I operate an aeration system with no filter?
This is not recommended. Filters provide protection from dust and debris which can easily get into your compressor and cause damage, which could result in the whole system shutting down.
