Matala 9'' Fine Bubble Air Diffuser Disc (With Stainless Steel Locking Ring)
What is a Matala Fine Bubble Air Diffuser Disc?
A Matala 9” air diffuser disc is one of most reputable products on the market when it comes to dispersing fine bubble columns into water bodies. They are self-weighted discs that are placed at the bottom of a lake or dam to help instigate aeration within a system. They are connected to hoses which are linked to compressors at the water’s edge, which extract air from above the surface.
Why Matala Fine Bubble Air Diffusers Are Important
An efficient air diffuser disc is vital if you want to generate powerful aeration within your water system. It is the output mechanism that allows fine columns of bubbles to drag unoxygenated water from the bottom of a water body and up to the surface, where gas transfer can take place. Without an effective diffuser, aeration can become inefficient which could lead to oxygen depletion for aquatic livestock and an increase in algal blooms.
What do I get?
- 1 x 9″ Fine Bubble Membrane Diffuser Disc
- Clamp for attaching your diffuser to your air hose
Benefits of Matala Fine Bubble Air Diffusers
Intelligent Operation
The membrane of the disc automatically clamps shut whenever air is not passing through, preventing water from entering the hose.
A Superior Design
Matala air disc diffusers are made from high-grade EPDM rubber with a PVC frame, making them highly durable and long-lasting.
A Trusted Brand
Matala has been one of the leading names in aquatic maintenance products and water solutions for over 25 years.
Even Dispersion of Fine Bubbles
The omni-channel design of the membranes allow for a uniform distribution of fine bubbles for all types of water systems.
How To Install and Maintain Your Matala Air Diffuser Discs
Installation
-
Attach the air hose to the diffuser and secure it with the clamp provided. We recommend the Matala ½” Self-Weighted Air Hose to help further reduce buoyancy and keep your system in place at the bottom of your water system.
-
Attach the check valve to the air delivery pipe - this acts as an additional failsafe to prevent water from entering the air hose.
-
Connect the hose to your compression system at the water’s edge. We recommend the Matala Aerator Kit as a good starting point - this comes with a weighted hose and additional air stations if needed.
-
Place your diffuser disc where it needs to go in the water. It should naturally sink to the bottom. You should always try to aim for the deepest part of your water body for maximum gas exchange efficiency and water turnover.
Maintenance
Matala is very much a DIY pond air diffuser - you won’t require extensive maintenance to keep your aeration system ticking over. The key maintenance considerations you’ll need to make will likely include:
-
Checking the pressure gauge at your compressor - an increase in pound-force per square inch (PSI) may indicate a blockage or clog around your diffuser.
-
Using clean water and a soft-bristled brush to scrub the rubber disc (avoid using stiff wire brushes as these can tear the membrane).
-
Soaking the discs in white vinegar if there is heavy calcium buildup.
-
Removing biofilm from in and around the diffuser.
-
Checking the valve to ensure air is still only able to flow one way.

FAQs
How do I set it up?
The diffuser should only be used with a suitable compressor system (e.g. Matala Aeration Kit). The diffuser disc is self-weighted, simply attach it to your air hose and place it where you want it. A clamp is included so you can easily attach the diffuser disc to the air hose running from your compressor. We suggest the use of weighted air hose to avoid having spaghetti-looking noodles floating on the surface of your dam.
Do you provide free shipping?
Yes - we provide free shipping to around 95% of Australian locations. There are some remote rural and island postcodes where we may need to apply additional shipping costs prior to dispatch. In these instances, we will notify you prior to dispatching.
What is the best aerator for the Matala 9” MDB12 diffusion discs?
The Matala Hakko is great for dams smaller than ½ an acre (2,000m2) surface area and the Matala Rocking Piston is perfect for larger dams - up to four acres. You can purchase these as complete aeration kits through our parent company, Water Quality Solutions.
How long can I expect a Matala fine bubble air diffuser disc to last?
Thanks to its closed membrane system, Matala air diffuser discs are built to last for between 5-10 years depending on maintenance and the general conditions of your pond. If you allow high levels of sludge to build up in and around the disc, for example, its lifespan will shorten.
