Matala Self-Weighted Tube Diffuser (50x300mm)
What is a Matala Self-Weighted Tube Diffuser?
A Matala self-weighted tube diffuser is a vital component within a wider subsurface aeration system. It is the mechanism that allows streams or air and bubbles to pass into a water body at high pressure. Manufactured with a membrane made from EPDM and a body made from ABS, this is a quality piece of equipment that will allow for high levels of consistent water circulation across ponds, dams, and lakes.
Why Matala Self-Weighted Tube Diffusers are Important
Diffusers act as exit points for streams of air to enter a water body in the form of tiny bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface of a water system, dragging deoxygenated water with them. At the surface, this water is reoxygenated and falls back into the body. Without an effective diffuser, aeration can become inefficient which could lead to oxygen depletion for aquatic livestock and an increase in algal blooms.
Benefits of Matala Self-Weighted Tube Diffusers
Lower Initial Costs
Tube diffusers are generally less expensive than circular options, so if you’re working with a tight budget, you’ll likely find high quality tube diffusers at lower prices.
Long-Lasting and Robust
The combination of ABS and EPDM manufacturing and stainless steel for the connective components make these tube diffusers highly durable.
Intelligent Protection
When air is running through the diffuser, the membrane opens. If the air stops, the membrane immediately closes. This helps the diffuser to resist tearing and damage.
Omni-Directional Design
With this type of design layout, the diffuser ensures a standardised distribution of fine bubbles which will lead to efficient, consistent aeration across an entire area.
How To Install and Maintain Your Matala Self-Weighted Tube Diffusers
Installation
-
As the name suggests, you won’t need to worry about additional weights of bases for this type of installation. The diffuser is designed to sink without additional assistance.
-
Attach the check valve to the air delivery pipe - this acts as an additional failsafe to prevent water from entering the air hose.
-
Attach the hose that will run from the air pump system at the water’s edge.
-
With the hose attached, you then need to simply travel out to where you are aiming to position your diffuser and drop it into the water.
Maintenance
Tube diffusers, when compared to disc diffusers, often have slightly more complex maintenance needs; they are more prone to biofouling where algae, biofilm, and slime wrap around the circumference of the tube.Â
The key maintenance considerations you’ll need to make will likely include:
-
Using a stiff nylon brush to scrub the length of the tube. This should be done periodically every few months.
-
Checking for bubble consistency while the air is running. If there are clear differences in bubble output and/or size, you’ve likely got a clog or blockage.
-
Submerging the entire tube in a vinegar bath during cleaning to remove potential mineral deposits.
-
Tightening hose clamps where the airline meets the tube.
-
Checking the weights to make sure it remains evenly distributed.

FAQs
Is a tube diffuser better than a disc diffuser?
Using a tube air diffuser rather than a disc diffuser is more effective in certain situations. If your pond is shallow and wide (or irregularly-shaped) rather than deep and narrow, a tube diffuser will likely produce more efficient aeration. These shallow depths also make maintenance and retrieval easier for tube diffusers.
How do the different dimensions affect aeration performance?
Your tube diameter and length will have certain impacts on the type of aeration outcome you’re looking to achieve. The 50x300mm version, for example, is excellent for lifting water from the bottom to the top in narrower areas, creating more focused gas exchange. However, the Matala 50x600mm Self-Weighted Diffuser has a less intense backpressure on the compressor.
Why do I need a tube diffuser for my pond?
Tube diffusers (and aeration in general) are essential for long-term pond and water health. Aeration helps to oxygenate water by forcing deoxygenated water up to the surface, where gas transfer can take place. This is an essential process to make sure fish can thrive in healthy environments. It also helps to stimulate the growth of aerobic bacteria which consume the nutrients that harmful plants feed off.
Do you provide free shipping?
Yes - we provide free shipping to around 95% of Australian locations. There are some remote rural and island postcodes where we may need to apply additional shipping costs prior to dispatch. In these instances, we will notify you prior to dispatching.
